Megan and Lexi Harris’s story became a hot topic recently. People start to talk about “believe in yourself, Self-image..etc..

The Story was Megan and her daughter Lexi went to a department store to shop. When Lexi came out in a red dress, (seen as below picture) the shop assistant suggest that she could wear compression garment to look a bit better. Lexi’s mother felt insulted and said to the shop assistant her daughter doesn’t need compression garment. Megan believes this kind of comments made a lot of girls have low self-image. Megan also pointed out that the shop assistant insist that Lexi needs compression garment.

It made me think. What is self-image. What contribute to your own self-image?

What is Self-image?

“Self-image is the mental picture, generally of a kind that is quite resistant to change, that depicts not only details that are potentially available to objective investigation by others (height, weight, hair color, gender, I.Q. score, etc.), but also items that have been learned by that person about himself or herself, either from personal experiences or by internalizing the judgments of others. A simple definition of a person's self-image is their answer to the question "What do you believe people think about you?".”

It is important to put a note on Self-image is actually relating to how people think about you. It is what you believe people think about you. By the judgments of others on your height, weight, hair colour, gender, IQ., score etc.. So no matter you like it or not, Self-image is relating to how other people think about you.

I am about to become a parent very soon. I am going to have a daughter too. I have all the good wishes for her. In regards to Self-image, I’d like to firstly provide her with healthy diet and healthy lifestyle, so she has a solid ground to succeed in positive Self-image.

Lexi’s mother Megan mentioned her daughter swims, runs, dances and does yoga. Sounded like Lexi’s life-style is ok, so what was the real issue? Is it the food brought to her table everyday by her parents? We’d probably need a picture of Megan and her husband. Because to be honest Lexi is only 13 and from the picture, she does need either healthier diet or better lifestyle. She is not being the best of what she could be. I have done a little research with this question in mind, and I found this picture of Megan. I think the answer is very obvious now.

It is important to build a mind to a child that “ You can achieve anything if you put your mind into it.”  Lexi’s mother has mentioned she is tall. I would not promote that idea in terms of building your own self-image. Because whether you are tall or short is not what you have worked hard on (or it is not what you can control). The key to build Self-image is “Be the best of what you can”. Anything belonging to your genie is not belonging to the list of what you should be proud of. But you can assure you live in a healthy lifestyle, you can visit gym at least once a week, you can be nice to people, you can have a healthy diet, you can improve your physical appearance by either botox / plastic surgery or by just in a natural way of doing waist training.  If positive Self-image will make people happy, then do whatever makes you happier.

Conclude what I’d like to express in above article. Self-image is not something you can give to your child. Things you can give to your children are a healthy active lifestyle, healthy diet. You can help your children know they can do anything they want to do.

Believe in You are beautiful is Not enough! You need to try your very best. If someone commented at your race or your height, you can just ignore that comment. Because it is not something you can work hard on. If someone commented at your personality or you are fat, then think about it and change your diet or your lifestyle.

The Key is “I CAN” Not “I AM”.
